Choosing a Scarlett comes down to inputs. Solo for one microphone and one instrument — a singer-songwriter or a podcaster working alone. 2i2 for two microphones at once, which covers interviews, duos and most home recording. 4i4 when you need more outputs for a headphone mix or outboard. 8i6 and 18i20 when you are tracking a band or a drum kit.
4th Generation. The current models add Auto Gain, which sets your input level from a test performance, and Clip Safe, which watches the signal and pulls gain back before it distorts. Air mode now has a Presence and Harmonic Drive setting derived from Focusrite's ISA console preamps.
Studio bundles pair the interface with a CM25 microphone and HP60 headphones, which is a reasonable way to start if you own neither.
