Focusrite iTrack One Pre Portable Microphone

The Focusrite iTrack One Pre is a single channel microphone preamp for iPhone and iPad that supplies 48 V phantom power from the device itself, on an XLR and jack combination input.

Phantom power from a phone

An iPhone or iPad cannot supply 48 V phantom power, which is why a studio condenser microphone cannot normally be used with one. The iTrack One Pre generates that phantom power itself and routes the signal into the recording app over the Lightning connector.

That single capability is the whole reason the product exists, and it is what separates it from a simple adapter cable.

One combination input

The input is a combination XLR and jack socket, so it takes a microphone or a guitar. One channel means one source at a time, which suits a songwriter capturing an idea, a journalist recording an interview, or a musician tracking a part while travelling.

For two simultaneous inputs on iOS, the iTrack Solo offers a microphone preamp and a separate Hi-Z instrument input over Lightning.

Power in practice

Running phantom power draws current, and Focusrite documents when to connect the iTrack One Pre to a USB charger rather than relying on the device alone. On a long session, or with a microphone that draws more current, plan for that power connection rather than discovering the limit mid-take.
