Built for location work

The Rugged drive is designed for the bag, the car and the outdoor shoot rather than the desk. It is rated to survive a fall from 1.2 metres, a one ton vehicle rolling over it, and rain and splashes. It is not waterproof, so it will not survive being submerged.

For a field recordist or a videographer copying cards between locations, those ratings are the difference between losing a day's work and not.

Connection

The drive connects over USB-C and ships with both a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A cable, so it works with new and older computers without an adapter. Transfer speeds reach up to 130 MB/s.

Software and recovery

LaCie Toolkit handles backups and optional folder level encryption. LaCie's Rescue data recovery service is available for the Rugged range, though not in every country.

A 5 TB version is listed separately. For encrypted storage, the Rugged Secure adds AES-256 hardware encryption.
