Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB Audio Interface (3rd Gen)

The Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen is a 2-in, 2-out USB interface with one 3rd generation microphone preamp, one switchable instrument input, Air mode and 24 bit, 192 kHz conversion. Mic input dynamic range is 111 dB A-weighted.

One microphone, one instrument

The Solo is built around the most common home recording case: one voice and one guitar, recorded one at a time or together. A single microphone preamp handles the microphone, and a separate switchable line and instrument input takes a guitar or bass directly.

If two microphones need to record simultaneously, the Scarlett 2i2 is the model to choose instead. That is the only meaningful difference for most buyers.

Air mode

The Air switch reproduces the effect of Focusrite's ISA microphone preamps. It is a rising response that begins around 100 Hz and builds toward 20 kHz, which lifts presence and detail on vocals and acoustic guitars.

It is applied on the way in, as a switch rather than a control, so it is a decision made while recording rather than a plugin afterwards.

Measured performance

Microphone input dynamic range is 111 dB A-weighted, line inputs 110.5 dB and instrument inputs 110 dB. THD+N is below 0.0012 percent on the microphone input, below 0.002 percent on line and below 0.03 percent on instrument. Gain range is 56 dB across the 3rd generation range.

Conversion runs 24 bit at up to 192 kHz. The interface is USB bus powered, with balanced outputs and a headphone output.
