Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 USB-C Audio Interface (3rd Gen)

The Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 3rd Gen is an 18-in, 20-out USB-C interface in a 1U rack with eight 3rd generation microphone preamps, two ADAT ports, S/PDIF, talkback, two headphone outputs and speaker switching.

Eight preamps, and eighteen inputs

Eight microphone preamps, two Hi-Z instrument inputs and eight line inputs cover the analog side, with S/PDIF and two ADAT ports carrying the rest. Ten analog outputs and two headphone outputs handle the return.

Eight preamps is the number that records a drum kit and a band at once, which is the reason to choose this over the 8i6 or the 4i4. Two ADAT ports also mean the input count grows further with an external preamp such as an eight channel expander.

Features that only appear on the larger interfaces

Talkback is fitted, so the engineer can speak to the performers without patching a microphone into a channel. Speaker switching with an anti thump feature lets two monitor pairs be compared without a thud through the drivers on every switch.

Loopback is included for capturing computer audio, and MIDI in and out are provided.

Measured performance and format

Microphone dynamic range is 111 dB A-weighted, line outputs 108 dB and headphone outputs 104 dB. Conversion covers 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz at 24 bit.

The unit is a 1U rack mount interface connecting over USB-C. Bundled software includes Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Intro+, Cubase LE and the Hitmaker Expansion with plugins from Antares, Softube, Landr and XLN Audio.
