Closed back, for tracking. The DT 770 PRO is the one you have seen in every studio photograph, and the impedance choice is the decision that matters: 32 ohm for laptops and portable recorders, 80 ohm as the general-purpose studio option, 250 ohm when you are driving it from a proper headphone amp and want the tightest control. Same headphone, three different answers depending on what is driving it. The DT 700 PRO X is the modern 48-ohm redesign that works well from anything.

Open back, for mixing. The DT 990 PRO is the bright, wide-staged classic; the DT 880 PRO is its semi-open, more neutral sibling. Above them the DT 1990 PRO ships with two pairs of pads that measurably change the tuning, and the DT 900 PRO X is the newer 48-ohm open-back.
