This guide counts Rs 30,000 as the price of two speakers, because you cannot mix on one. A monitor listed at Rs. 15,990 each costs Rs. 31,980 for a pair and does not make the cut, however good it is. A note on the low-end column: makers measure differently. Yamaha and Mackie quote the point where output has fallen 10 dB, JBL quotes plus or minus 3 dB, and M-Audio and PreSonus give a range without stating the tolerance. A -10 dB figure always looks deeper than a plus or minus 3 dB figure for the same speaker, so compare within a brand first and treat cross-brand numbers as a rough guide.

Desktop pairs with one powered speaker
The Mackie CR-X, PreSonus Eris E3.5 and E4.5, M-Audio BX3 and BX4, and Yamaha HS3 and HS4 all put the amplifier in one speaker and feed the other through speaker wire. You get RCA and 3.5 mm inputs for a laptop or phone, a headphone jack on the front, and one power plug. They are built for desks and short listening distances.
Full studio monitors sold singly
The JBL 305P MkII has its own amplifiers in each cabinet and takes only balanced XLR and TRS inputs. You need an audio interface, but you get a larger woofer, more power and more headroom. At this budget, a pair of JBL 305P MkII is the pick of this type.
Why woofer size matters most
A 3 or 3.5 inch woofer is fine for speech, video and casual music, but kick drums and bass lines thin out. A 4 or 4.5 inch woofer is the minimum we suggest for music production. A 5 inch woofer is where mixing low end starts to feel reliable without a subwoofer.

The Yamaha HS4 uses a 4.5 inch cone woofer and 1 inch dome tweeter, with a 26 W + 26 W Class-D amplifier in the left speaker. Yamaha lists 60 Hz to 22 kHz at -10 dB, 83 Hz to 20 kHz at -3 dB, and 102 dB SPL maximum output. Inputs are two XLR/TRS combo jacks, two RCA and a stereo mini jack, and there is a front headphone output.
Room Control (0, -2 or -4 dB below 500 Hz) and High Trim (plus or minus 2 dB above 2 kHz) are the same switches Yamaha uses on its bigger HS monitors. They let you correct bass build-up when the speakers sit near a wall, which is the normal situation on an Indian study table. The HS4 is voiced flat rather than flattering, so what sounds balanced on it tends to hold up on earphones and car speakers.

The JBL 305P MkII is the only 5 inch bi-amplified studio monitor in this guide that fits under Rs 30,000 as a pair. JBL specifies a 5 inch woofer and 1 inch soft dome tweeter, each driven by its own 41 W Class-D amplifier, with a frequency response of 49 Hz to 20 kHz (plus or minus 3 dB), a range of 43 Hz to 24 kHz at -10 dB, and 108 dB maximum peak SPL.
The tweeter sits in JBL's Image Control Waveguide, designed to widen the sweet spot so the stereo image holds when you move in your chair. A Boundary EQ switch cuts low end at 50 Hz by 0, 1.5 or 3 dB to compensate for desk and wall placement, and an HF Trim switch offers -2, 0 or +2 dB. Inputs are one XLR and one TRS, both balanced, with a +4 dBu / -10 dBV sensitivity switch.
Each speaker measures 298 x 185 x 231 mm (H x W x D) and weighs 4.73 kg, so check your desk depth. With Rs. 2,802 left from the budget, you will still need balanced cables and an audio interface if you do not already own one.

The M-Audio BX4 gives you 4.5 inch Kevlar woofers, 1 inch silk dome tweeters in a waveguide, and 120 W total peak (2 x 25 W RMS) for Rs. 17,499 a pair. M-Audio lists the response as 69 Hz to 22 kHz. Inputs are an RCA stereo pair and two 1/4 inch TRS jacks on the rear, plus a 1/8 inch aux input and a headphone output on the front. High and low EQ controls and a switch to choose which side holds the powered speaker complete the package.
It is the cheapest 4.5 inch pair in this list and has the most connection options for the price. The M-Audio BX3 (Rs. 14,099 a pair) is the same design with 3.5 inch woofers and an 80 Hz lower limit, suited to very small desks.
Want Bluetooth? M-Audio BX4 BT (Rs. 20,499 a pair)
The M-Audio BX4 BT adds Bluetooth with a quoted range of 100 feet (30.5 m) to the same 4.5 inch drivers, 120 W peak and 69 Hz to 22 kHz response. The wired inputs stay, so your interface can remain connected for work while your phone streams music in between sessions. For Rs. 3,000 more than the standard BX4, Bluetooth is the main change.
PreSonus Eris E3.5 and E4.5: tone controls and a front headphone jack
PreSonus rates both Eris models at 25 W per speaker (50 W total), 100 dB peak SPL at 1 metre, and a 2.8 kHz crossover, with a 1 inch silk dome tweeter and a woven composite woofer. Both have front-panel volume, a 1/8 inch aux input and a headphone jack, and rear inputs of two balanced 1/4 inch TRS and two unbalanced RCA.
- Eris E3.5: 3.5 inch woofer, 80 Hz to 20 kHz, 141 x 162 x 210 mm (W x D x H), 2.9 kg for the pair. Rs. 12,490 a pair.
- Eris E4.5: 4.5 inch woofer, 70 Hz to 20 kHz, 163 x 180 x 241 mm, 5.9 kg for the pair. Rs. 19,990 a pair.
The standout feature is continuously variable MF and HF controls, each adjustable from -6 to +6 dB (centred at 100 Hz and 10 kHz). That is more adjustment than the switches on most rivals. It helps in awkward rooms, but set both to centre when you mix so you are not hearing your own EQ.
Mackie CR3-X and CR4-X: lowest entry price
The Mackie CR3-X at Rs. 8,999 a pair is the cheapest way into proper powered monitors. Mackie describes the CR-X range as using polypropylene coated woofers, 0.75 inch ferrofluid cooled silk dome tweeters and all-wood cabinets. The CR3-X has a 3 inch woofer, 50 W peak Class D amplification, 70 Hz to 20 kHz at -10 dB and 97 dB peak output.
The Mackie CR4-X at Rs. 12,990 a pair moves to a 4 inch woofer, reaching 55 Hz to 20 kHz at -10 dB and 100 dB peak, with the same 50 W peak amplifier and a 3.0 kHz crossover. Both take 1/4 inch balanced or unbalanced, RCA and 1/8 inch inputs, with a front headphone output, volume knob and a switch to place the powered speaker on either side.
These suit video editing, gaming, online classes and casual music. For serious mixing, the M-Audio BX4 or Yamaha HS4 is the better use of a few thousand rupees more.
Close, but over Rs 30,000 for a pair
These are good monitors that people often shortlist at this budget. Each is sold as a single speaker, so the pair price crosses the line.
- M-Audio BX5-D3: Rs. 15,499 each, Rs. 30,998 a pair. A 5 inch Kevlar woofer, 100 W bi-amplified (60 W low, 40 W high), 52 Hz to 35 kHz and XLR plus TRS inputs. Only Rs. 998 over, and worth stretching for if you mix with an interface.

Buying and setting up monitors in India
Power and voltage
Buy units meant for Indian 230 V mains. Yamaha, for example, notes that the HS3 and HS4 limiter settings vary with supply voltage and asks you to use them at the voltage printed on the rear panel. In areas with voltage swings or frequent power cuts, plug the monitors, interface and computer into a UPS or a spike-protected power strip. Turn the speakers on last and off first to avoid thumps.
Room size
In a typical 10 x 10 ft bedroom, 4 to 5 inch monitors are the right size. Larger woofers in a small untreated room mostly add boom you cannot control. Place the speakers at ear height, angle them towards you, and keep them a little away from the wall behind. Use the room or boundary controls before you reach for EQ in your software.
Heat, humidity and dust
Leave space around the powered speaker so its amplifier can breathe, cover the monitors when not in use, and keep them off windowsills during the monsoon.
Warranty
