M-Audio BX5-D3 Powered Studio Monitor

The M-Audio BX5-D3 is a bi-amplified 5 inch studio monitor, 100 W split as 60 W to the woofer and 40 W to the tweeter, covering 52 Hz to 35 kHz, with XLR and TRS inputs and Acoustic Space control.

Bi-amplification, and why it is listed as two numbers

The 100 W figure is 60 W driving the low frequency section and 40 W driving the high. Each amplifier is matched to its own driver rather than one amplifier feeding a passive crossover, which is what keeps the tweeter clean when the woofer is working hard.

The woofer is a 5 inch (127 mm) Kevlar curved cone with a high temperature voice coil and a damped rubber surround. The tweeter is a 1 inch (25 mm) magnetically shielded natural silk dome in a computer optimised waveguide.

Response and room control

Frequency response is 52 Hz to 35 kHz. Acoustic Space control adjusts the low end for the room, which is what you reach for when the monitors have to sit close to a wall and the bass builds up.

Inputs are one XLR balanced and one TRS balanced or unbalanced connector, so the monitor takes a proper balanced feed from an interface.

Size and pairing

Each monitor is 176 x 197 x 254 mm and weighs 5.6 kg. Specifications describe a single monitor, so a stereo setup needs two.

For a larger room or more low end, the BX8 D3 moves to an 8 inch woofer, 150 W and 37 Hz. For a smaller desk, the BX4 covers 69 Hz at a fraction of the size.
