The M-Audio BX4 is a powered 2-way monitor pair with 4.5 inch Black Kevlar woofers and 1 inch silk dome tweeters, rated 120 W total peak, 2 x 25 W RMS, reaching 69 Hz to 22 kHz.

The extra inch of driver

Response reaches down to 69 Hz, against 80 Hz for the 3.5 inch BX3. Eleven hertz sounds small written down, but at that end of the scale it is roughly the difference between hearing the body of a bass note and only hearing its harmonics. For a desk pair used to make decisions rather than only to listen, that matters.

A rear mounted bass port extends the low end further, and the tweeter sits in a computer engineered waveguide that widens the usable listening position and cuts high frequency scatter off the cabinet edges.

Inputs for a real desk

An RCA stereo pair, two 1/4 inch TRS inputs and a 1/8 inch stereo auxiliary input are all fitted, so an interface, a computer and a phone can stay connected at once. A 1/8 inch stereo headphone output is on the front panel with the volume control.

Tuning to the room

High-EQ and Low-EQ controls adjust the response for a room or a desk position, and a left/right active speaker position switch sets which cabinet is which. Each speaker is 6.1 x 6.9 x 8.9 inches and weighs 9.83 lbs.

For a step up in low end, the BX5 D3 uses a 5 inch Kevlar woofer with 100 W of bi-amplification and reaches 52 Hz.
