Yamaha RX-V4A 5.2-Channel AV Receiver with Cinema DSP

Five channels, and what that covers

A 5.2 layout is front left and right, centre, two surrounds and two subwoofer outputs. That is a complete surround system for a normal living room, and it is the configuration most content is mixed for outside of Atmos.

Power is 80 W per channel into 8 ohms. For height channels or a larger room, the RX-A2A steps up to 7.2 channels at 100 W and adds Dolby Atmos and DTS:X.

HDMI 2.1 and 8K

Four HDMI inputs and one output run HDMI 2.1 with 8K passthrough, Dolby Vision and HDR10+. eARC is supported on the output, which is the connection that lets a modern television send lossless audio back down the same cable to the receiver.

For a buyer connecting a current games console or a high refresh rate source, HDMI 2.1 is the specification that decides whether the receiver stays useful for the next several years.

Streaming and control

MusicCast is built in, which covers multi-room audio across other Yamaha MusicCast devices as well as Spotify, TIDAL and Pandora. Voice control works through Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri.

Cinema DSP is Yamaha's own set of surround programmes, which apply measured characteristics of real venues to the surround field rather than only steering channels.

The receiver measures 435 x 377 x 245 mm and weighs 8.8 kg. Check the depth against the cabinet before ordering, since AV receivers need clearance behind for cables and above for heat.
