Yamaha MG20XU 20-Input Mixer with Built-In FX & 2-In/2-Out USB Interface

The Yamaha MG20XU is a 20-input analog mixer with up to 16 microphone and 20 line inputs, four group buses plus a stereo bus, four aux sends, D-PRE preamps, one-knob compressors, 24 SPX effects and 24 bit, 192 kHz USB. It weighs 7.1 kg.

Channel layout

Twelve mono channels and four stereo channels give a maximum of 16 microphone or 20 line inputs. Four group buses feed a stereo bus, and four aux sends including the effects send handle monitors and outboard.

Group buses are the difference between this and the smaller MG12XU. Grouping drums, or a backline, onto a pair of faders is what makes a 20 input desk manageable during a show rather than a wall of individual channels.

Preamps and channel processing

Microphone preamps are Yamaha's D-PRE discrete Class-A design with an inverted Darlington circuit. Each channel has a one-knob compressor, which puts usable compression within reach of an operator who is not going to set four separate controls during a soundcheck.

The SPX processor provides 24 effects programmes.

USB and size

The USB interface is 2 in and 2 out at up to 24 bit and 192 kHz, so the desk records its stereo mix and plays back from a computer. The console measures 444 x 130 x 500 mm and weighs 7.1 kg.

For a smaller system, the MG12XU has 12 inputs and six preamps at 4.0 kg. For a substantially larger one, the MGP24X and MGP32X move to 24 and 32 channels with DSP hybrid channel processing.
