Yamaha MG12XU 12-Input Mixer with Built-In FX and 2-In/2-Out USB Interface

The Yamaha MG12XU is a 12-input analog mixer with six D-PRE discrete Class-A microphone preamps, one-knob compressors, 24 SPX effects and a 2-in, 2-out USB interface running at 24 bit and 192 kHz. It weighs 4.0 kg.

D-PRE preamps

The six microphone preamps use Yamaha's D-PRE discrete Class-A design with an inverted Darlington circuit, and 48 V phantom power is available for condenser microphones. This is the same preamp family Yamaha fits across its larger consoles, which is the main reason the MG series is specified for permanent installs rather than only for rehearsal rooms.

One-knob compressors

Compression on a live desk is usually either ignored or set wrong, because a full compressor has four controls that interact. The one-knob compressor collapses threshold, ratio, attack and release into a single control with an LED indicator, which means a vocal or a bass channel gets usable compression from an operator who is not an engineer.

The SPX processor supplies 24 effects programmes, the same reverb and delay lineage Yamaha has been refining since the original SPX90.

USB, and what 2-in 2-out means

The USB interface carries two channels in and two channels out at up to 24 bit and 192 kHz. Two channels out is the stereo mix, so the desk records as a stereo capture rather than as individual tracks. For multitrack recording, a different class of interface is needed.

For a podcast, a livestream, a rehearsal recording or playback from a laptop, two channels is exactly what is required.

Size

The console weighs 4.0 kg and is rack mountable. For a larger channel count with the same preamps, effects and USB specification, the MG20XU offers 20 inputs with four group buses.
