Reading the three power numbers

Passive speakers quote three ratings and they are not interchangeable. Noise, 175 W here, is the continuous figure. Program, 350 W, is the realistic amplifier match for music. Peak, 700 W, is the short term ceiling. Match an amplifier to the program rating rather than to the peak.

Sensitivity is 96 dB SPL for 1 W at 1 m, which is what turns amplifier watts into volume in the room, and maximum SPL is 125 dB calculated peak.

Coverage and response

Frequency range is 48 Hz to 20 kHz at -10 dB, with 90 degrees horizontal by 60 degrees vertical coverage and a crossover at 2.1 kHz. The 12 inch cone runs a 2 inch voice coil on a ferrite magnet, and the high frequency driver uses a 1.4 inch voice coil compression driver.

The enclosure is plastic, bass reflex, at 14.8 x 23.7 x 13.7 inches and 30.6 lbs, with a 35 mm pole socket in the bottom.

Passive means an amplifier is required

The CBR12 has no amplifier inside. Connections are one 1/4 inch phone socket and one speakON NL4MP. Budget for an amplifier and speaker cable alongside it.

If a self-powered box is preferred, the Yamaha DBR12 is the equivalent 12 inch active model with 1000 W of Class-D amplification, a two channel input mixer and 131 dB SPL, and needs only a power outlet and a signal cable.
