Solid State Logic SSL E Series EQ Module for API 500 Series

The SSL E Series EQ module is a 500 series equaliser reproducing the 611E equaliser section from the SL 4000 E console, with four bands, two fully parametric mids and switchable Black 242 and Brown 02 EQ curves.

Two console EQ circuits in one module

The module carries both the Black 242 and the Brown 02 designs, each with its own response curve. Those are the two generations of SSL's E Series console EQ, and engineers have preferences between them: the Brown knob circuit is generally described as gentler and more musical, the Black as more aggressive and surgical. The Brown circuit offers 15 dB of cut and boost.

Having both switchable in one 500 series slot is the reason to choose this over a single-circuit clone.

The four bands

The low mid and high mid bands are fully parametric with a variable Q control, so each can be set broad for shaping or narrow for removing a specific problem. The high and low frequency bands are shelving filters that can be switched to bell curves, which changes what they do entirely: a shelf lifts everything above or below a point, a bell lifts a range and leaves the extremes alone.

An IN button bypasses the EQ so the sound can be compared before and after without changing the settings.

Format

The module fits any API 500 series rack. It is an analog processor, so it needs a powered 500 series chassis, which is sold separately if you do not already own one.
