Solid State Logic SSL 2 Desktop 2x2 USB Type-C Audio Interface

The SSL 2 is a 2x2 (2-in, 2-out) USB-C audio interface with two SSL-designed microphone preamps offering 62 dB of gain, 24 bit and 192 kHz conversion, and the Legacy 4K switch that adds the harmonic character of SSL's 4000 series consoles.

The preamps and the numbers

Two SSL-designed microphone preamps provide 62 dB of gain, which is enough for most dynamic and condenser microphones without an inline booster. Dynamic range is 110.5 dB on the microphone inputs, 112 dB on the outputs and 111 dB on the headphone output.

Conversion runs at 24 bit and 192 kHz. Both channels take microphone, line or instrument sources, with switchable 48 V phantom power for condensers.

Legacy 4K

The 4K switch is the reason to buy an SSL interface rather than a generic one. It applies an analog circuit that adds harmonic content and a high frequency lift, modelled on the sound of the SL 4000 console, and it is applied on the way in rather than as a plugin afterwards.

On a vocal or an acoustic guitar it is the difference between a technically clean recording and one that already sits in a mix. It is a switch, not a control, so the decision is made at the source.

SSL 2 or SSL 2+

The SSL 2 is 2 in and 2 out with a single headphone output. The SSL 2+ has the same preamps and adds two more outputs, a second independent headphone output and 5 pin DIN MIDI in and out.

The second headphone output is the deciding feature if two people will ever record at once, because it can run a different mix from the first.
