Four headphone outputs, three of them balanced

Outputs are XLR3, XLR4, 6.3 mm and dual 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn. That covers essentially every termination a modern headphone ships with, which means the HDV 820 does not force a re-cable when a new headphone arrives.

Dynamic range is over 115 dB into 600 ohms, which is the figure that matters when driving a 300 ohm headphone such as the HD 600, HD 650, HD 660S2 or HD 800 S.

Converter and inputs

The ESS SABRE 9028PRO converter handles PCM files up to 32 bit and 384 kHz, and DSD256 up to 12.3 MHz. Alongside the digital inputs, balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA analog inputs are fitted, so an existing source can be connected directly without going through conversion twice.

Total harmonic distortion is below 0.001 percent and frequency response extends beyond 10 Hz to 100,000 Hz.

Size and pairing

The unit measures about 224 x 44 x 306 mm and weighs about 2.25 kg, so it is a desktop amplifier rather than a portable one. It is the natural partner for the 300 ohm Sennheiser open headphones, which do not reach their intended performance from an interface headphone socket.
