Sennheiser HD 660S2 Wired Over-Ear Headphones

The Sennheiser HD 660S2 is an open-back headphone on a 38 mm transducer at 300 ohms, covering 8 Hz to 41.5 kHz with total harmonic distortion below 0.04 percent, at 260 g. It ships with both balanced and unbalanced cables.

What changed against the HD 660S

The coil was revised so that impedance now matches the 300 ohms of the HD 600 and HD 650, where the earlier HD 660S was 150 ohms. That single change moves the headphone back into the same amplifier requirements as the rest of the reference line, and it is the reason the HD 660S2 behaves like a member of that family rather than a portable variant of it.

Bass extension was reworked at the same time. Quoted response now runs from 8 Hz to 41.5 kHz.

Two cables in the box

A 1.8 m cable terminating in a 4.4 mm balanced Pentaconn plug and a 1.8 m cable terminating in a 6.35 mm unbalanced jack are both supplied. That matters: balanced outputs are common on modern desktop amplifiers and portable players, and buying an aftermarket balanced cable for a 300 ohm headphone is otherwise an extra cost.

Distortion is quoted below 0.04 percent and weight is 260 g.

Choosing within the open Sennheiser line

The HD 600 is the neutral reference. The HD 650 is voiced slightly warmer at 10 Hz to 41,000 Hz. The HD 660S2 is the newest, with the widest quoted range and both cables included. All three are 300 ohms and all three want an amplifier.

Above them sits the HD 800 S, which uses a 56 mm ring driver, reaches 4 Hz to 51,000 Hz and holds distortion to 0.02 percent.
