Description
The Sennheiser HD 600 is an open-back circumaural headphone with a nominal impedance of 300 ohms, and it has been the reference against which studio headphones are compared for three decades. It needs an amplifier to work properly.
Why 300 ohms matters before you buy
A 300 ohm load is not what a phone or a laptop output is built to drive. Plugged into one the HD 600 will play, quietly and without control at the bottom. Plugged into a headphone amplifier or a decent interface output it changes character completely. Budget for the amplifier as part of the purchase.
Measurements show impedance is not flat either: it rises to around 500 ohms at the driver's primary resonance near 100 Hz. A source with a high output impedance interacts with that swing and alters the bass response, which is the technical reason these headphones sound different from different amplifiers.
Open back, and what you give up
The open design provides very little isolation. Anyone nearby hears what you are listening to, and you hear the room. In exchange the soundstage opens out and the low end stays free of the pressure build up a sealed cup creates.
That makes the HD 600 a mixing and listening headphone rather than a tracking headphone. In front of a live microphone it will leak into the take. For overdubs, a closed model such as the HD 620S is the correct tool.
HD 600, HD 650 or HD 660S2
All three are open, circumaural and 300 ohms. The HD 650 is voiced slightly warmer, with a quoted 10 Hz to 41,000 Hz range and 103 dB sound pressure level, weighing 260 g without the cable. The HD 660S2 is the newer design, 8 Hz to 41.5 kHz, distortion below 0.04 percent, with reworked bass extension and both 4.4 mm balanced and 6.35 mm unbalanced cables in the box.
The HD 600 remains the neutral reference of the three, and it is the one most often used as a check against other headphones.
