120 ohms sits between two worlds
At 120 ohms the HD 560S is easier to drive than the 300 ohm HD 600 and HD 650, while still benefiting clearly from a real headphone output rather than a phone. A modern audio interface will drive it properly. A laptop headphone socket will get it loud enough but will not control it well.
Maximum sound pressure level is 110 dB at 1 kHz and 1 V, and quoted frequency range is 6 Hz to 38,000 Hz.
Voiced for accuracy, not for flattery
The HD 560S is tuned toward neutrality, which makes it useful for mixing decisions and unforgiving of bad masters. Listeners moving from a consumer headphone often read that as thin at first; it is the absence of a bass lift rather than a lack of bass extension.
As an open design it isolates very little in either direction, so it belongs in a quiet room and not in a recording booth.
Where it sits
The HD 599 is the warmer, more relaxed open model at 50 ohms. The HD 600 and HD 650 move up to 300 ohms and a more refined presentation. The HD 560S is the one to choose when accuracy per rupee is the objective and the amplifier budget is limited.
