sE Electronics X1S Condenser Microphone

The sE Electronics X1S is a large diaphragm cardioid condenser on a hand-crafted one inch true condenser capsule, 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 30 mV/Pa with 9 dB self noise, two pads reaching 160 dB SPL and two low cut frequencies. It weighs 445 g.

Nine decibels of self noise

Self noise of 9 dB is low for any condenser and unusual at this price. It is the specification that decides how a microphone performs on quiet sources: a soft vocal, a fingerpicked guitar, a voiceover recorded at a polite level. Below the microphone's own noise floor, nothing is recoverable.

Sensitivity is 30 mV/Pa, the highest in the X1 range, which means less preamp gain is needed and less preamp noise arrives with the signal.

A 160 dB ceiling

Pads are switchable at -10 dB and -20 dB, giving 140 dB, 150 dB or 160 dB maximum SPL at 0.5 percent THD at 1 kHz. A 160 dB ceiling is higher than most studio condensers reach and puts the X1S in front of a kick drum or a guitar cabinet without concern.

Low cut is switchable at 80 Hz or 160 Hz, 6 dB per octave. The 160 Hz setting is for close vocal work where proximity effect is heavy.

Against the X1A

The X1A uses a 2/3 inch back-electret capsule at 16 dB self noise and 20 mV/Pa, with a single 20 dB pad and a fixed 100 Hz filter. The X1S adds a true condenser capsule, 7 dB less self noise, more output and twice the switching.

It ships with a microphone stand clip and a thread adapter.
