sE Electronics X1A Condenser Microphone

The sE Electronics X1A is a large diaphragm cardioid condenser on a 2/3 inch back-electret capsule, 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 20 mV/Pa with 16 dB self noise, a 20 dB pad reaching 150 dB SPL and a 100 Hz low cut. It weighs 390 g.

The entry point to the X1 range

The X1A is the model to start with for a first condenser: vocals, voiceover, acoustic guitar and podcasting, in a cardioid pattern that rejects the room behind the microphone.

The capsule is a 2/3 inch back-electret. That is smaller than the one inch true condenser in the X1S, and it is the main reason for the difference in price and in noise floor between the two.

Pad and filter

A 20 dB pad raises maximum SPL from 130 dB to 150 dB at 0.5 percent THD at 1 kHz, so the X1A can sit in front of a guitar cabinet or a snare as well as a voice. The low cut is fixed at 100 Hz, 6 dB per octave, switchable on or off.

One hundred hertz is a slightly higher corner than the 80 Hz used on most microphones, which suits close vocal work where proximity effect builds up quickly.

X1A or X1S

The X1S uses a hand-crafted one inch true condenser capsule with 9 dB self noise against 16 dB here, 30 mV/Pa against 20 mV/Pa, two pad settings and two filter frequencies. If the microphone will be used on quiet sources or in a treated room, the X1S is a real step up.

For a home setup where room noise sets the floor anyway, the X1A is the sensible buy. It ships with a swivel mic clip and a stand thread adapter.
