sE Electronics sE8 Small-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (Pair)

The sE Electronics sE8 Pair supplies two hand-crafted true condenser small diaphragm cardioids, each 25 mV/Pa with 13 dB self noise, two pads to 159 dB SPL and switchable 80 Hz or 160 Hz low cut.

A matched pair for stereo positions

Two identical small diaphragm condensers is the standard requirement for drum overheads, piano, stereo acoustic guitar, string sections and room pairs. Both microphones must behave the same way or the stereo image inherits their differences.

The sE8's 13 dB self noise matters more in these positions than on a close source, because stereo techniques usually sit further back and need more gain.

Control on each microphone

Pads at -10 dB and -20 dB give maximum SPL of 139, 149 or 159 dB at 0.5 percent THD. Low cut is switchable at 80 Hz or 160 Hz at 6 dB per octave. Having both filter options is useful on overheads, where 160 Hz keeps the kick and toms out of the cymbal channels.

Each capsule is a hand-crafted 1/2 inch true condenser, sensitivity 25 mV/Pa, response 20 Hz to 20 kHz, weight 141 g, on a gold plated 3 pin XLR.

Against the sE7 pair

The sE7 pair is the more affordable option with a back-electret capsule, 16 dB self noise, one pad and one filter frequency. The sE8 pair adds output, lowers noise and doubles the switch options. For overheads on a loud kit, the extra pad step is worth having.
