sE Electronics sE8 Small-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

The sE Electronics sE8 is a small diaphragm cardioid condenser on a hand-crafted 1/2 inch true condenser capsule, 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 25 mV/Pa with 13 dB self noise, two pads reaching 159 dB SPL and two low cut frequencies. It weighs 141 g.

True condenser, not electret

The sE8 uses an externally polarised true condenser capsule rather than the back-electret design in the cheaper sE7. In practice the difference shows in the noise floor and the output: 13 dB self noise and 25 mV/Pa here, against 16 dB and 19 mV/Pa on the sE7.

Three decibels of self noise and 2.5 dB of extra output sound minor. On a distant room pair or a quiet acoustic source, where the preamp has to be turned up, they are what keeps the recording clean.

Two pads and two filters

Pads are switchable at -10 dB and -20 dB, giving maximum SPL of 139 dB, 149 dB or 159 dB at 0.5 percent THD at 1 kHz. Low cut is switchable at 80 Hz or 160 Hz, 6 dB per octave.

Having two of each rather than one is the practical advantage over the sE7. A 160 Hz filter is the one to use on a close acoustic guitar where 80 Hz leaves too much body.

Single or pair

This listing is one microphone with a mic clip, thread adapter and windscreen. The sE8 pair supplies two for overheads, stereo acoustic or a room pair. The connector is a gold plated 3 pin male XLR.
