sE Electronics sE7 Small-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

The sE Electronics sE7 is a small diaphragm cardioid condenser on a 1/2 inch back-electret capsule, 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 19 mV/Pa, with 16 dB self noise, a 20 dB pad taking it to 156 dB SPL, and an 80 Hz low cut. It weighs 128 g.

What a small diaphragm does that a large one does not

A 1/2 inch capsule is lighter than a one inch capsule, so it follows fast transients more accurately. That is why small diaphragm condensers are the default on acoustic guitar, hi-hat, cymbals, percussion and strings, where the attack carries the character.

The cardioid pattern rejects from behind, and at 128 g the sE7 is light enough to mount on a thin boom over a drum kit without the stand drifting during a session.

Pad and filter

A switchable 20 dB pad raises maximum SPL from 136 dB to 156 dB. That upper figure is what makes the sE7 usable as a close cymbal or snare microphone rather than only as a room or acoustic instrument microphone.

The low cut is 80 Hz at 6 dB per octave, which removes stage rumble and handling noise without touching the body of an acoustic instrument.

Single or pair
