The sE Electronics sE4400a is a multipattern large diaphragm condenser with four polar patterns, a hand-crafted one inch gold-sputtered capsule, 20 Hz to 20 kHz at about 25 mV/Pa, with switchable 10 and 20 dB pads and a switchable low cut. Self noise is 16 dB and signal to noise is 78 dB.

Four patterns from the body

Cardioid, hypercardioid, omnidirectional and figure-8 are selected on the microphone. Four patterns rather than the usual three matters because of hypercardioid: it is tighter at the front than cardioid and rejects the sides more firmly, which is the pattern to use when a source has to be isolated from others in the same room.

Figure-8 opens up mid-side and Blumlein recording, and omni gives the flattest low frequency response with no proximity effect.

Pads, filters and headroom

Attenuation is switchable at 10 dB and 20 dB, and a low cut filter is switchable on the body. Between the pattern switch, the pad and the filter, the microphone is configured at the stand rather than fixed afterwards in the mix.

Sensitivity is about 25 mV/Pa. Self noise on this version is 16 dB with a signal to noise ratio of 78 dB.
