sE Electronics RF-X Reflexion Filter

The sE Electronics RF-X is a four layer portable acoustic filter that mounts behind a microphone to reduce the room reflections reaching it. It is the entry model in the Reflexion Filter range.

The four layers, and what each does

Working from the outside in: a vented composite outer panel, a wool fabric layer, an air gap, and an inner acoustic foam layer. The order is deliberate. The foam absorbs the first arrival from the microphone side, the air gap decouples the layers so energy is not simply transmitted through, and the outer panel stops what remains from continuing into the room and returning.

That layered construction is what separates a Reflexion Filter from a plain foam shield, which absorbs high frequencies and passes everything below them.

What it does and does not fix

A filter behind the microphone reduces the reflections arriving from behind and around it, which is what makes a small untreated room sound less like a small room on a close vocal. It reduces early reflections rather than sound entering the room from outside.

It does not soundproof. Traffic, a fan or a neighbour will still be recorded. For that, the room itself has to be addressed.

The range above it

The RF PRO is the original patented design with redesigned hardware that pans and tilts, supplied with a mounting bracket, screw wrench and stand thread adapter. The SPACE is larger again, with more layers and deeper air gaps, and is hand-built at the sE factory.

The RF-X ships with a mounting bracket and a mic stand thread adapter, and needs a sturdy stand: a filter of this size puts significant weight well above the stand base.
