sE Electronics guitaRF Guitar Amplifier Reflection Filter

The sE Electronics guitaRF is a Reflexion Filter made for a guitar amplifier rather than a voice, mounting in front of the cabinet with the microphone inside it so the recorded sound is the speaker rather than the room.

The problem it solves

A guitar cabinet in a small room is loud enough to excite every surface around it. The microphone in front of the speaker hears the cone, and then hears the wall behind the cabinet, the ceiling and the floor arriving a few milliseconds later. Those reflections are what make a home recorded guitar sound smaller than the amp does in the room.

Placing the amplifier and microphone inside a reflection filter reduces what returns from the room, so the recorded track is closer to what the speaker is producing.

Why an amp version differs from a vocal one

A vocal Reflexion Filter sits behind the microphone and faces the singer. A guitar filter has to deal with far higher sound pressure levels and with a source that is fixed in position, which changes both the construction requirement and where the filter is placed.

It uses the same sE multi-layer approach that works evenly across the frequency spectrum rather than absorbing only the top end, which matters on guitar where the important information sits in the midrange.

Practical notes

Recording a loud cabinet at close range is still loud in the room. The guitaRF reduces what the microphone picks up from the room, not what the room hears from the amplifier. Hearing protection and neighbours remain your own problem.
