RME M-1610 Pro 16-Channel AD/DA Converter

The RME M-1610 Pro is a 1U converter with 16 analog inputs and 8 analog outputs, feeding MADI, AVB and ADAT at the same time, with dual redundant power supplies. It is the box that gets sixteen analog sources onto a network and keeps them there.

Converter performance

The 16 inputs measure 117.0 dB RMS unweighted and 120.7 dBA signal to noise at +24 dBu, with THD+N below -108 dB, or 0.00039 percent, at -1 dBFS. The 8 outputs measure 116 dB RMS unweighted and 119 dBA, with THD+N below -107 dB, 0.00043 percent.

Maximum level is switchable per channel at +24, +19 or +13 dBu, on inputs and outputs independently, so the converter matches a broadcast chain and a studio chain without a patch change. The headphone output reaches +13 dBu unbalanced and +19 dBu balanced. Sample rates run 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz, clocked by SteadyClock FS.

Three digital outputs at once

MADI is on coaxial with an optional optical SFP, carrying 64 channels at 48 kHz, 32 at 96 kHz and 16 at 192 kHz. AVB uses two gigabit Ethernet ports with eight streams and up to 128 channels. Four optical ADAT outputs are available, including quad speed S/MUX4. Word clock is on BNC.

Running MADI and AVB together is what makes the M-1610 Pro useful as a bridge as well as a converter: analog in, and out to both a MADI console and an AVB network.

Built to stay up

Two 30 W 100 to 240 V AC supplies are fitted, monitored and fully redundant, drawing about 20 W in use and 0.5 W in standby. A 2 inch colour display with a control knob covers local setup, and a web interface handles remote control. The unit is a 19 inch enclosure, one height unit, 440 x 44 x 243 mm, 2.8 kg.
