RME Digiface AVB 256-Channel Mobile AVB/USB Audio Interface

The RME Digiface AVB is a 256-channel bridge between an AVB network and a computer, bus powered over USB 3.0, in a box of 300 g. It has no analog inputs and one headphone output, because its job is to carry channels, not to convert them.

Channel counts by sample rate

Up to 256 channels pass through the unit. In practice that is 128 channels in and out at 48 kHz and 24 bit, 64 in and out at 96 kHz, and 32 in and out at 192 kHz. Up to 16 AVB streams are supported, and each stream can be configured from 2 to 32 channels, so the layout matches the network rather than a fixed block size.

Connections

One gigabit Ethernet port on RJ45, compliant with 802.3, carries the audio. USB 3.0 connects the computer. Word clock in and out sit on BNC. Clock sources are internal, AVB or word clock.

The single headphone output on a 6.3 mm unbalanced jack is a monitoring point, and it is a proper one: 110 dB RMS unweighted, 113 dBA dynamic range, 2 ohm output impedance, 50 mW maximum at 0.1 percent THD. Frequency response reaches 20.8 kHz at 44.1 kHz, 45 kHz at 96 kHz and 89 kHz at 192 kHz.

Power and size

The Digiface AVB draws its power from the USB bus, typically 1.5 W and at most 2 W, which is 400 mA at 5 V. It measures 112 x 26 x 83 mm and weighs 300 g, so it travels in the same bag as the laptop. TotalMix FX, an AVDECC controller and DigiCheck are included.
