RME Digiface AES 14x16 Audio Interface

The RME Digiface AES is a 14x16 channel USB interface built around AES/EBU, bus powered, in a half rack box of 880 g. It is the unit for a facility whose signals arrive on XLR as AES rather than on ADAT or MADI.

What is on the panel

The published I/O count is 14 inputs and 16 outputs: two mic/line analog inputs, four analog outputs, and the digital ports on top of those. The AES/EBU I/O is on XLR, transformer balanced and galvanically isolated, which is what keeps a ground loop between two buildings out of the audio. A 6.3 mm unbalanced headphone output handles monitoring.

Clock behaviour

Clocking is SteadyClock FS, with internal, AES, SPDIF and ADAT as selectable sources. Jitter suppression of external clocks is better than 50 dB above 1 kHz, so a mediocre incoming clock does not become a mediocre recording. Sample rates run from 28 kHz to 200 kHz, with figures published at 44.1 kHz, 96 kHz and 192 kHz.

Power and portability

The Digiface AES runs from USB 2.0 bus power or an external supply, drawing about 3 W. It measures 215 x 44 x 130 mm and weighs 880 g. TotalMix FX and DigiCheck NG are included with the drivers, so routing and metering work the same way as on the rest of the RME range.
