RME AVB Tool Mic Preamp, Router, and Converter

The RME AVB Tool is a half rack box holding four microphone preamps, a MADI port and an AVB network interface, so a small number of high quality inputs can join a large network. It is the four channel end of RME's network range.

Four inputs worth putting on a network

Four XLR/TRS combo sockets take microphone, instrument or line sources. XLR gain is 75 dB and TRS gain is 42 dB, both in 1 dB steps. The XLR path measures above 117 dB RMS unweighted and above 120 dBA signal to noise, with THD below -110 dB at 30 dB gain, which is 0.00032 percent.

Two balanced line outputs on 6.3 mm TRS and a stereo headphone output handle the return leg. The headphone output measures 115 dB RMS unweighted, 118 dBA, with THD+N below -100 dB.

AVB and MADI together

AVB runs eight streams of up to 16 channels each per direction, up to 128 channels in total. MADI is on coaxial BNC with an optional optical SFP, at 64 channels single speed, 32 double speed and 16 quad speed, all 24 bit. Word clock is on 75 ohm BNC and clocking is SteadyClock FS. Sample rates are 44.1, 96 and 192 kHz.

On the unit

A 1.54 inch colour display with an encoder and buttons handles setup at the box. USB 2.0 is present for remote control and firmware. Power comes from an external 2 A 100 to 240 V AC supply, drawing 13 W in use and 0.5 W in standby. The enclosure is 215 x 44 x 130 mm and weighs 1.0 kg.

Against the 12Mic, the difference is channel count and nothing else that matters: four preamps here, twelve there, with the same gain range and the same class of conversion.
