RME ARC USB Advanced Remote Control for TotalMix FX

The RME ARC USB is a hardware remote for TotalMix FX. It puts monitor level, talkback, dim, mono and transport under your hand instead of under a mouse, and it works with every RME interface that TotalMix FX supports, going back to 2001.

What it controls

The encoder wheel handles main volume. Around it, the key rows are configurable from within TotalMix FX, so the functions you reach for most sit where you want them. In stand-alone mode the layout is fixed and useful straight away: the first row selects four setups, the second row two more, the third row gives mono, two headphone volume controls and dim, and the lower keys run record, play and pause, and stop.

Because the assignment lives in TotalMix FX rather than in the remote, changing what a key does is a software change, not a rewiring job.

Connection and compatibility

ARC USB connects as a USB 1.1 UAC1 MIDI remote and is bus powered, drawing very little current. Windows and macOS detect it without a driver install. It can control several interfaces at once, and it works either connected to a computer or stand-alone.

Direct connection is supported on the UFX series, the 802 FS, the UCX II and the MADIface XT II. For longer cable runs RME recommends active USB 2 cables beyond 20 metres, which is worth knowing if the remote sits at a talent position and the interface is in a machine room.

Why a hardware remote at all

A monitor level control that needs a window in focus is a monitor level control you will not use during a take. ARC USB keeps level, dim and talkback reachable while the DAW is doing something else, and it keeps the same controls available when the interface is running with no computer at all.
