RME 12Mic Mic- and Line-Level Preamp for Audio Networks

The RME 12Mic is a twelve channel microphone preamp and AD converter for networked audio, with AVB, MADI and ADAT on the back and remote gain control from a browser. It puts twelve preamps where the microphones are and sends them over one network cable.

Twelve preamps, no pad

All twelve channels give 75 dB of gain in 1 dB steps and accept up to +18 dBu with no pad switch in the path, so nothing is inserted in front of the signal to handle a loud source. Four of the inputs double as XLR/TRS with high impedance for instruments.

Conversion is 24 bit at 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz, with signal to noise above 117 dB RMS unweighted and above 120 dBA, and THD below -110 dB at 30 dB gain.

Three transports on one box

AVB runs on two RJ45 gigabit ports, eight streams per direction of up to 16 channels each, with redundancy across the pair. MADI is on coaxial BNC with an optional optical SFP module, carrying 64 channels at 48 kHz, 32 at 96 kHz and 16 at 192 kHz, and MADI input redundancy when the SFP is fitted. Three TOSLINK ports give ADAT output. Word clock is on BNC, and clocking is SteadyClock FS.

Control without a laptop in the rack

A 1.54 inch colour display with a control knob and four buttons sets everything on the unit itself. Remote control is over HTTP and a JSON API, with IEEE 1722.1 ATDECC and MIDI over MADI also supported, and a USB 2.0 port for firmware and control. Gain is remote controlled, which is the point: the preamp lives at the stage end and the gain changes from the control room.

12Mic or 12Mic-D

Identical preamps and converters. The 12Mic speaks AVB on its network ports. The 12Mic-D speaks Dante, up to 64 channels with two fully redundant ports. Pick the one your existing network already runs.
