RME 12Mic-D Network-Ready Microphone Preamp with Dante, ADAT, and MADI

The RME 12Mic-D is the Dante version of the 12Mic: twelve remote controlled microphone preamps with 75 dB of gain, feeding up to 64 Dante channels over two redundant network ports, with MADI and ADAT alongside.

Preamps and conversion

Twelve microphone and line inputs on XLR, the first four also taking TRS. XLR gain is 75 dB in 1 dB steps with a maximum input of +18 dBu at 0 dB gain; the TRS inputs give 42 dB in 1 dB steps and take +20 dBu at 8 dB gain.

The XLR path measures above 117 dB RMS unweighted and above 120 dBA signal to noise, with THD below -110 dB at 30 dB gain, or 0.00032 percent, and THD+N below -104 dB. The TRS inputs measure 115 dB RMS unweighted and 118 dBA.

Dante with real redundancy

Two RJ45 gigabit ports carry up to 64 Dante channels and are fully redundant, so a cut cable or a failed switch port does not take the stage box off the network. MADI is available at the same time on coaxial BNC, with an optional optical SFP module, in 56 channel and 64 channel modes plus 96k frame. Three TOSLINK ports give ADAT output, including quad speed S/MUX4 at 192 kHz.

Running it

A 1.54 inch colour display with control knob and four buttons handles local setup, and the unit is controlled remotely over HTTP and JSON. Sample rates run 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz. Word clock is on BNC.

Choosing between 12Mic-D and 12Mic

The preamps and converters are the same in both. The 12Mic-D is for a Dante plant, the 12Mic for an AVB plant. Both keep MADI as a second path, so either can bridge into a MADI console or interface such as the Fireface UFX III.
