The PreSonus ATOM SQ is a hybrid keyboard and pad controller with 32 RGB velocity and pressure sensitive pads in a staggered layout and eight endless rotary encoders, about 14 inches wide, 7 inches deep and an inch tall, USB bus powered.
The staggered pad layout
The 32 pads are arranged in a staggered grid rather than a square one, and that arrangement is what lets the same surface work as a keyboard and as a pad grid. In keyboard mode the offset rows map to notes the way black and white keys do; in pad mode it is a step sequencer or a clip grid.
That dual identity is the reason to choose the ATOM SQ over the 16 pad ATOM: one surface covers drum programming, melodic playing and clip launching.
Built around two DAWs
The ATOM SQ is designed for deep integration with Studio One and with Ableton Live. In practice that means transport, clip launching, mixer control and instrument parameters map without manual assignment in those two hosts.
In other DAWs it operates as a general MIDI controller, so check the integration you expect before buying if you work elsewhere.
Controls and size
Eight endless rotary encoders handle software parameters. The unit is about 14 inches wide, 7 inches deep and an inch tall, with a USB bus powered design, so it travels alongside a laptop.
For a simpler pad-only surface, the ATOM has 16 pads, 20 buttons and four knobs at 195 x 202 mm.
