Neumann U89 i Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone

The Neumann U89 i is a five pattern large diaphragm condenser covering 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 8 mV/Pa, with 17 dB-A self noise, 134 dB maximum SPL rising to 140 dB with the pad, in a body 46 mm across and 185 mm long weighing 400 g.

Five patterns in a slim body

Omnidirectional, wide angle, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure-8 are available. At 46 mm diameter and 185 mm long the U89 i is noticeably slimmer than most multipattern condensers, which is a practical advantage in positions where a wide body is in the way: under a piano lid, inside a drum kit, or paired closely for a coincident stereo technique.

Filters and pad

A switchable 6 dB preattenuation raises maximum SPL from 134 dB to 140 dB. The low cut is a two stage filter offering linear, 80 Hz and 160 Hz settings, which is more useful than a single fixed filter: 80 Hz handles rumble, 160 Hz handles proximity build up on a close voice.

Sensitivity is 8 mV/Pa, or -42 dBV, plus or minus 1 dB. Self noise is 17 dB-A.

Choosing among Neumann multipattern models

The TLM170 R offers the same five patterns with lower self noise at 14 dB-A and a much higher 154 dB ceiling. The TLM107 offers five patterns at 10 dB-A and 153 dB with its pad. The U89 i is the compact one, and the one to choose when the microphone has to physically fit somewhere the others will not.
