Neumann U87 Ai Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (Stereo Set)

The Neumann U87 Ai Stereo Set supplies two U 87 Ai multipattern condensers, each with omni, cardioid and figure-8 patterns, 28 mV/Pa sensitivity and 12 dB-A self noise in cardioid, and a 117 dB maximum SPL that rises to 127 dB with the -10 dB pad.

The reference, in a pair

The U 87 has been the default large diaphragm studio condenser for half a century, and a pair of them covers orchestral, choral, drum overhead and room work in a way that needs no justification to any engineer who will use them.

Three patterns are available on each microphone: omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8. Two figure-8 capsules give a Blumlein pair; a cardioid with a figure-8 gives mid-side; two omnis give a spaced pair with full low end.

The numbers, and where they sit

Sensitivity is 20, 28 and 22 mV/Pa in omni, cardioid and figure-8. Self noise is 12 dB-A in cardioid, rising to about 15 dB-A in the other patterns. Maximum SPL is 117 dB, or 127 dB with the -10 dB preattenuation switch engaged.

Those SPL figures are lower than newer Neumann designs: the TLM103 handles 138 dB and the TLM107 reaches 153 dB with its pad. The U 87 Ai is bought for its character and its midrange rather than for headroom, and on the sources it is normally used for, 117 dB is not a limitation.

Stereo set or single

This listing is the two microphone set. For a single U 87 Ai, or for a fixed cardioid alternative at lower cost and lower self noise, compare against the TLM103 at 7 dB-A, and against the five pattern TLM107 if pattern flexibility matters more than the U 87 voicing.
