Neumann U47 fet Large-Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The Neumann U47 fet is a large diaphragm cardioid condenser covering 40 Hz to 16,000 Hz at 8 mV/Pa, with 18 dB-A self noise and a maximum SPL of 137 dB, or 147 dB with the 10 dB pad. It weighs 710 g.

Built for loud sources

A 147 dB ceiling with the pad engaged is what the U47 fet is known for, and it is why the microphone became a standard on kick drum and bass cabinet as much as on voice. Few condensers will sit inside a kick drum without complaint; this one was designed to.

There is a 10 dB pad on the capsule side and a separate 6 dB output pad, which handle two different problems: the first stops the capsule overloading, the second stops the microphone overloading the preamp that follows it.

The response is deliberately not flat to 20 kHz

Quoted frequency range is 40 Hz to 16,000 Hz, narrower at both ends than a modern condenser. That is part of the character rather than a shortcoming: the limited top end is a large part of why the microphone sounds the way it does on voice and on drums, and the 40 Hz bottom keeps subsonic energy out of a close kick position.

A high pass filter at 140 Hz is fitted for close work where proximity effect builds up. Self noise is 18 dB-A, output impedance is 150 ohms, and sensitivity is 8 mV/Pa at 1 kHz into 1 kohm.

Where it fits against the rest of the range

The TLM103 is quieter at 7 dB-A and flatter to 20 kHz, and is the better choice for a neutral vocal or acoustic capture. The U47 fet is bought for character and for its ability to sit in front of sources that would overload most condensers. At 710 g it is heavy, so use a substantial stand.
