Five patterns from one switch

Omnidirectional, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure-8, selected by a rotary switch on the body. That range covers close work, room work and mid-side recording from a single microphone.

Wide cardioid is the pattern worth knowing about. It sits between omni and cardioid, keeping some rear rejection while avoiding the strong proximity effect a cardioid has close in, which makes it useful on voice at moderate distance.

Headroom

With the -10 dB preattenuation switch engaged the TLM170 R handles up to 154 dB SPL, and dynamic range is 130 dB. Those figures put it in front of a guitar cabinet, a snare or brass without concern, while 14 dB-A of self noise keeps it usable on quiet sources.

Sensitivity is 8 mV/Pa at 1 kHz into 1 kohm, plus or minus 1 dB.
