Neumann TLM107 Multipattern Condenser Microphone

The Neumann TLM107 is a multipattern condenser with five patterns, 10 dB-A self noise, 11 mV/Pa sensitivity in cardioid, and a maximum SPL of 141 dB at 0.5 percent THD, rising to 153 dB with -12 dB preattenuation.

Five patterns and a pad that goes to 153 dB

Omni, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure-8 are available. Preattenuation is switchable at 0, -6 and -12 dB, and with the full -12 dB engaged the microphone handles 153 dB SPL. That is a very high ceiling for a studio condenser and puts it comfortably in front of drums, brass or a guitar cabinet.

Without the pad, maximum SPL is 141 dB at 0.5 percent THD. Self noise is 10 dB-A, so the same microphone still works on quiet sources.

The control layout

Pattern, pad and low cut are set from a single navigation control rather than from separate switches around the body. On a microphone with five patterns and three pad settings, that consolidation is what keeps the rear of the microphone readable when it is already mounted and pointed at a source.

The capsule is an edge terminated design. Sensitivity in cardioid is 11 mV/Pa.

TLM107 or TLM103

The TLM103 is fixed cardioid with lower self noise at 7 dB-A and a 138 dB ceiling, and no switches at all. The TLM107 trades 3 dB of self noise for five patterns, three pad settings, low cut options and a 153 dB ceiling.

Buy the TLM103 if the work is voice and acoustic sources in cardioid. Buy the TLM107 if the microphone has to cover many different sources and rooms. The TLM107 Studio Set adds the elastic suspension.
