The Neumann TLM103 Stereo Set supplies two TLM 103 cardioid condensers for stereo recording. Each is 7 dB-A self noise, 23 mV/Pa, 138 dB maximum SPL, 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
What two of them let you do
A single cardioid condenser records a source. A matched pair records a space. Drum overheads, piano, a string section, a choir, a room pair behind a close microphone: all of these need two microphones of the same model, because any difference in tone between the two becomes a difference between the left and right sides of the image.
Common techniques with a cardioid pair are XY, ORTF and spaced pair. All three work with this set.
Why the TLM103 suits stereo work
Self noise of 7 dB-A is the reason. Stereo techniques usually place microphones further from the source than a close microphone would sit, and distance costs level. A quiet capsule is what allows that distance without the recording's noise floor rising to meet it.
Each microphone covers 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 23 mV/Pa with a maximum SPL of 138 dB, has a fixed cardioid pattern, and carries no pad or filter switches.
Against the single microphone listings
The plain TLM103 listing is one microphone by itself. The Mono Set is one microphone with the EA 1 elastic suspension. This Stereo Set is the two microphone option, and it is the one to order when the intended use is overheads, a room pair or any stereo technique rather than a single close source.
