Motu AVB Switch - Five-Port AVB Ethernet Switch

The MOTU AVB Switch connects up to five AVB audio interfaces over standard Cat-5e or Cat-6 cable using the IEEE 802.1 AVB standard, with five 1-Gigabit AVB ports and one standard Ethernet port.

Why AVB needs its own kind of switch

An ordinary network switch treats audio like any other data, so a busy moment can delay packets. AVB, Audio Video Bridging, reserves bandwidth for audio streams and gives every connected device a shared network clock, with timing accurate to nanoseconds.

The switch discovers connected AVB devices automatically and manages the bandwidth between them, so channels arrive on time regardless of other traffic.

Ports and distance

Five 1-Gigabit AVB ports connect MOTU interfaces, stage boxes such as the Stage B16, or further switches. A sixth, standard Ethernet port connects to a Wi-Fi router or the internet for web app control.

Cable runs can reach 100 metres on Cat-5e or Cat-6, which is what lets a stage box sit at the far end of a hall from front of house.

Power and size

The switch runs on 8 to 18 V DC, tip positive, at 0.5 A. It measures 14 x 9.2 x 2.7 cm, small enough to sit beside the interfaces it connects.
