Motu 828 USB-C Audio/MIDI Interface

The MOTU 828 is a USB-C audio and MIDI interface with 28 inputs and 32 outputs, two microphone preamps with 74 dB of gain, eight balanced line inputs and eight DC coupled line outputs, two ADAT banks and up to 125 dB of dynamic range.

Channel count

At 44.1 or 48 kHz the 828 runs 28 inputs and 32 outputs, 60 channels in total. At 88.2 or 96 kHz that becomes 20 in and 24 out, and at 176.4 or 192 kHz, 10 in and 14 out.

Two banks of ADAT optical I/O carry 16 channels at base rates, or 8 channels of S/MUX at double rates, which is how external preamps and converters extend the input count. Stereo S/PDIF on RCA works up to 96 kHz.

Preamps and converters

Two XLR and TRS combination inputs offer 74 dB of preamp gain in 1 dB steps, with an individual -20 dB pad and 48 V phantom power per channel. Microphone inputs measure 118 dB of dynamic range.

Eight balanced 1/4 inch line inputs and eight balanced line outputs measure 120 to 125 dB. The line outputs are DC coupled, so they can send control voltages to modular synthesizers. Two 1/4 inch insert returns double as extra line inputs.

Monitoring and connection

Two male XLR outputs feed monitors, and two headphone outputs measure 118 dB. MIDI in and a MIDI out/thru are fitted. Connection is USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 at 5 Gbps.

The unit measures 19 x 12.25 x 1.75 inches and weighs 11 lbs.
