Moog Sub 37 Tribute Edition Analog Synthesizer

The Moog Sub 37 Tribute Edition is a limited release analog synthesizer on the Sub Phatty sound engine, with 37 semi-weighted keys with velocity and aftertouch, two oscillators plus a sub oscillator, and a Moog ladder filter. It plays two notes at once, the first Moog in over 30 years to do so.

Paraphonic, and what that means in practice

The Sub 37 is duophonic. It plays two notes at a time, each from its own oscillator, while both pass through a single filter and envelope. That is enough for intervals, drones under a moving line, and two-note basses, while keeping the weight of a monophonic Moog.

It is not a polysynth. Chords of three or more notes are outside what it does.

The sound engine

Two oscillators each sweep continuously from triangle through sawtooth and square to pulse, at 16, 8, 4 and 2 foot ranges. A square wave sub oscillator sits one octave below oscillator one, with a noise generator alongside.

The filter is Moog's resonant low pass ladder, switchable at 6, 12, 18 and 24 dB per octave, with overdrive. Two DAHDSR envelopes can loop and sync, and two LFOs run from 0.1 Hz to 1 kHz.

Performance and connection

An arpeggiator and a 64 step sequencer are stored per patch, with 256 preset memories. The panel carries 40 knobs and 74 switches, so almost every parameter has its own control rather than a menu.

Audio leaves on a 1/4 inch output, with a headphone output. Control voltage inputs cover filter, pitch, volume and gate. MIDI runs over 5 pin DIN and USB. The instrument weighs 10 kg.
