Manley Labs Reference Cardioid Tube Microphone

The Manley Reference Cardioid is a tube condenser microphone with a centre-fixed cardioid capsule on a 6 micron gold sputtered diaphragm, covering 10 Hz to 30 kHz at 17 mV/Pa, with a 150 dB maximum SPL and a switchable -10 dB pad.

One pattern, on purpose

The Reference Cardioid is cardioid only. It is a different microphone from Manley's Reference Gold, which offers three patterns. A fixed pattern capsule avoids the compromises of a switchable design, and for most vocal and voiceover work cardioid is the pattern used anyway.

The capsule is centre fixed, with a 6 micron gold sputtered diaphragm.

The tube

Current units use a 12AX7 or 7025EH tube. Earlier versions used a 12AT7 and 6072. The tube stage is where the microphone's character comes from, and the tube is a replaceable part over the microphone's life.

Frequency response is 10 Hz to 30 kHz, sensitivity is 17 mV/Pa, and output impedance is 250 ohms. Manley publishes the noise as -120 dB EIN.

Headroom, power and what is in the case

Maximum SPL is 150 dB, and the -10 dB pad handles loud sources. Power comes from Manley's universal switch mode supply, which works on any mains voltage and draws 8 W.

The microphone weighs 2.25 lbs and the supply 2.35 lbs. A shock mount, a carrying case and a leather capsule cover are included.
