Manley Labs Enhanced Stereo Pultec EQP1-A Equalizer

The Manley Enhanced Stereo Pultec EQP1-A puts two channels of Manley's passive tube program equaliser into one 2U chassis, with the same added 20 Hz low boost and 25 kHz high shelf as the mono unit. Manley lists the design as discontinued.

Why a stereo unit rather than one mono

Stereo bus and mastering work needs the same equalisation on both channels. Two channels built into one chassis keep the settings side by side, so matching left and right is a matter of setting the same positions on adjacent controls. This is the form mastering engineers typically use the design in.

The Pultec behaviour

The equaliser network is passive, so it only removes level, and a tube amplifier restores the gain afterwards. That is why large boosts stay smooth. Setting boost and attenuation on the same low frequency does not cancel out; the two curves have different shapes, and the result is a bass lift with a dip above it that tightens the low end.

A bandwidth control sets how sharp the high frequency boost is, from broad to focused.

What Manley added, and the format

Beyond the original Pultec, Manley added a 20 Hz setting to the low boost and a 25 kHz shelf to the high end: sub bass the original could not reach, and air above the audible range. Gain is set to unity with a rear trim for more.

The unit is 2U. Manley lists it as discontinued, so plan servicing and tube replacement through a Manley service partner. The mono version is a 1U single channel of the same design.
