Manley Labs Enhanced Pultec EQP1-A Equalizer

The Manley Enhanced Pultec EQP1-A is Manley's version of the classic Pulse Techniques passive program equaliser, with an all tube makeup amplifier and two bands the original never had: a 20 Hz low boost and a 25 kHz high shelf. Manley lists this model as discontinued.

How a Pultec works, and the trick it is known for

The equaliser itself is passive: a network of inductors, capacitors and resistors that only removes level. A tube amplifier after it then restores the gain. That structure is why a Pultec sounds smooth even with large settings.

The famous technique is to boost and attenuate the same low frequency at the same time. The two curves are shaped differently, so the result is not cancellation but a bass lift with a dip just above it. That tightens a kick drum or a bass line without making it muddy, and it is the reason engineers still reach for this design.

What Manley changed

Manley added a 20 Hz setting to the low frequency boost and a 25 kHz shelf to the high end. The 20 Hz boost reaches the sub bass the original could not. The 25 kHz shelf adds air above the audible top end, lifting the upper harmonics that sit below it.

The makeup amplifier uses one 12AX7WA and one 6414 or 5965 tube. Gain is set to unity at the factory, with a rear trim for extra gain. Balanced and unbalanced connections are provided.

Format and status

This is the mono unit, in a 1U chassis measuring 19 x 1.75 x 10 inches. Manley suggests a matched pair for stereo mastering work, which is what the stereo version of this equaliser provides in one 2U box.

Manley now lists the model as discontinued. Plan for servicing and tube replacement through a Manley service partner.
