Manley Labs CORE Tube Reference Channel Strip

The Manley CORE is a 2U channel strip combining an all tube preamplifier, a 3:1 electro-optical compressor, a three band Baxandall equaliser and a FET brickwall limiter, with microphone, line and instrument inputs.

Four processors in signal order

The preamplifier is all tube: one 12AX7 for gain and one 6922 as a White Follower output stage. It offers 40 or 60 dB of gain from the microphone input and 20 or 40 dB from the line input.

The compressor is Manley's ELOP electro-optical design at a fixed 3:1 ratio, with up to 16 dB of gain reduction. The equaliser is a three band Baxandall type, with high and low shelves and a sweepable midrange band. A FET brickwall limiter sits at the end to catch peaks.

Inputs

A balanced XLR microphone input at 1200 ohms, a balanced XLR line input at 10 kOhms, and an unbalanced 1/4 inch instrument input at 10 megohms. The very high instrument impedance is what lets a guitar or bass plug straight in without losing top end.

Outputs and insert

A direct XLR output and a main output, both at 50 ohms, plus a 1/4 inch TRS insert point for adding outboard gear into the chain.

The unit is a 2U rack device, 19 x 3.5 x 7 inches, weighing 8.3 lbs. It records a vocal or an instrument through one box, so a small studio gets a complete tube front end without assembling separate units.
