M-Audio Hammer 88 Pro 88-Key USB MIDI Controller

The M-Audio Hammer 88 Pro is an 88 key controller with a graded hammer action and channel aftertouch, plus 16 RGB pads, eight knobs and nine faders. It weighs 40.8 lbs.

Graded action and aftertouch

Two things separate the Pro from the standard Hammer 88. First, the action is graded: heavier at the bottom of the keyboard and lighter towards the top, the way an acoustic piano behaves, and the grading is pronounced enough to be felt rather than claimed. Second, it has channel aftertouch, applied globally or per MIDI channel or per zone.

Per zone aftertouch is worth understanding. Split the keyboard, and pressure can be routed to only one of the parts, so a held pad swells while the bass line underneath stays flat.

A full control surface

Sixteen RGB backlit assignable velocity sensitive pads with note repeat handle drum programming and clip launching. Eight assignable knobs with buttons and nine assignable faders cover plugin and DAW control, which turns the instrument into a mixing surface as well as a keyboard.

Smart controls and auto mapping set those assignments up without a manual configuration pass in the common DAWs.

Size

The Hammer 88 Pro is 56.00 inches wide, 11.10 inches deep and 5.00 inches high, weighing 40.8 lbs, so it is slightly heavier and slightly shallower than the standard Hammer 88.

If the pads, knobs and faders are not needed and aftertouch is not either, the plain Hammer 88 gives the same 88 note scale for less.
