M-Audio BX8 D3 8-inch Powered Studio Monitor

The M-Audio BX8 D3 is a bi-amplified 8 inch studio monitor with 150 W of amplification, 80 W to the woofer and 70 W to the tweeter, reaching 37 Hz to 22 kHz.

An 8 inch woofer and what it buys

Response reaches 37 Hz, which is low enough to hear the fundamental of most bass parts rather than inferring it from harmonics. That is the reason to choose an 8 inch monitor over a 5 inch, and it is also the reason the BX8 D3 needs a room: a monitor that produces 37 Hz in a small untreated space will produce a room mode along with it.

The woofer is an 8 inch (203 mm) Kevlar curved cone with a high temperature voice coil and damped rubber surround. The tweeter is a 1.25 inch (32 mm) magnetically shielded natural silk dome in a computer optimised waveguide.

Amplification and inputs

Bi-amplification splits 150 W as 80 W to the low frequency driver and 70 W to the high, each matched to its own driver. Inputs are one XLR balanced and one TRS balanced or unbalanced connector.

Acoustic Space control trims the low end for the room, which on a monitor this size is not optional if the speakers sit anywhere near a wall.

Size and pairing

Each cabinet is 250 x 302 x 384 mm and weighs 10.5 kg. The specification describes a single monitor, so a stereo pair means two units and, at this size and weight, stands rather than a desk.

The BX5 D3 is the smaller version, 5 inch and 52 Hz, for rooms and desks that cannot take an 8 inch cabinet.
